Internet Safety For Children

Posted by: Joyce in parenting, online safety program, online safety, child online safety on Jun 10, 2008

I think perhaps the hottest topic today is internet safety for children. I’m not one to sugar coat the truth. It is hot because it is a safety issue that nobody can control.

Yes, there are a lot of preventative things that can be done and should be done by parents, kids and teenagers while online. There are many great online safety experts and dedicated people working very hard to control the criminals and predators and slow the problem. There is even a bold individual or two that believes the problems may someday even be eliminated.

I’m telling you this because, until an international database of criminals and sexual predators is available online and we all have to scan our thumbprint in to unlock our keyboards, the problem of disgusting individuals trolling for our children will not disappear. It is just too, too easy to hide anonymously behind a keyboard and computer screen.

What we can do is know how to stay one step in front of the problem. We can learn the basics of online safety and take the time to teach them to our kids, especially teenagers.

Here a couple of easy resources:

FBI’s Parent’s Guide to Online Safety and NetSmartz Online Safety Tips.
