Posted by: Joyce in online safety, internet safety, education on Jun 27, 2008

I noticed this news item this morning: "Woman Gets Two Years for Aiding Nigerian Internet Check Scam (PC World)" When we think of problems online most of us think about the sensational headlines regarding kids in chat rooms and seucal predators.

I'm here ttoday to let you know that most of us, yes adults, have no idea how to keep ourselves safe on the Internet, wither. Your kids and teenagers need to have you be safe and know the basics along with them. Some adults, in online dating sites, are at risk from sexual deviants. You need to know that whenever you decide to meet someone face to fact to do so in a very public place and with a trusted friend of yours. never meet anyone for the first time alone, on your own, or in a quiet, non-public place.

More importantly, the scams online, just like this Nigerian check scam, catches adults all the time. We're talking millions of dollars, in this case. So, today, your online safety tips is: NEVER,EVER respond to an unsolitcited email offer or request. In the case of the infamous Nigerian check scam, it was presented as an offer of help and a way for you to make money for that help. Thousands of Americans fell for it and had no idea they were partaking in an illegal activity to boot.

If it tugs at your hearts trings beware....if it sounds to good to be true it is. Have a very healthy skepticism about anything you come across online.
